It's been an interesting year for eyebrows. In April, bloggers and beauticians were 'feathering' their brows, delicately parting them and stroking them into place. Then, in the autumn, squiggle brows arrived, wobbly like a kebab van queue at 3am on a Saturday morning. They were followed by 'crown brows'. Surely, we thought, that would be the end?
No. Christmas has blessed us with its own festive variation. People are weaving in tinsel, tiny baubles, even threading miniature fairy lights through their busy eyebrow hair. The trend was started by Instagram user Taylor R. It's all gone a little bonkers. Essentially, you just need to separate your eyebrows and shape them into fir tree branches. After, add gems and stars and other twinkly things. Some people have even painted their hairs green.
Don’t panic, but our planet constantly makes a low humming noise – and scientists finally recorded it at the bottom of the sea. Scientists have been trying to detect it since the 50s, and the first study confirming ‘the hum’ was published in 1998. Previous studies have measured it on land, using seismometers, but new measurements at the bottom of the sea could mean that scientists can finally puzzle out what’s causing it. The hum is known as ‘free oscillations’, caused by slight expansion and contraction of the Earth – and one theory is that it’s caused by the pounding of ocean waves, according to ScienceAlert. Researchers led by Martha Deen at the Paris Institute of Earth Physics used 11 months worth of data from 57 seismometer stations in the Indian Ocean. They removed interference until they were left with a hum between 2.9 and 4.5 millihertz – far below the threshold of human hearing. Deen and her co-authors believe the hum could be used to map the interior of our planet. Scientists traditionally examine the interior using seismic waves generated from earthquakes, but this only works at specific times and in areas where quakes commonly occur. Using the hum signal as a source of seismic waves would avoid this problem because the hum is generated continuously in many ocean-continent areas at the planet’s surface.
Conspiracy theorists have been sent into overdrive with speculation about a bizarre so-called "psyop" against US citizens after Donald Trump allegedly warned of a psychological operation in a cryptic tweet. The CIA has released a top-secret document that claims to offer a cure for cancer. The declassified document dates back to 1983 and details the CIA’s Gateway Process. In it, subjects would try to better control their own brainwaves using meditation techniques and reach higher levels of consciousness. I doubt the guy was really trying to kill me, though he very easily could have. It required emergency surgery to close up an artery and the knife stopped just shy of puncturing my lung. My friend, also bouncing, was stabbed over his heart, but his sternum stopped the blade. That’s probably what caused the stabber to slice his own fingers open, which lead to finding him and the conviction. He was charged with attempted murder, along with a bunch of other things. On top of a hill in Dalhousie, colloquially known as Dalhousie Mountain, there are numerous names carved into rocks. Most are weathered and worn from the elements, but names such as "J.D. Howe" and the date "SPT 1880" can still be seen. However, there is a mystery. What exactly are these names doing on the top of that mountain? Bill Clarke, the director of the Restigouche Regional Museum, said there's no concrete explanation as to who carved the names or why. Clarke also said not a lot of research has been done to find out. "We haven't really done a lot of research on them largely because there's so much else to do." While someone must have known about the existence of the name carvings, their modern-day discovery took place sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The cremated remains of what an inscription says is the Buddha, also called Siddhārtha Gautama, have been discovered in a box in Jingchuan County, China, along with more than 260 Buddhist statues. The translated inscription on the box reads: "The monks Yunjiang and Zhiming of the Lotus School, who belonged to the Mañjuśrī Temple of the Longxing Monastery in Jingzhou Prefecture, gathered more than 2,000 pieces of śarīra [cremated remains of the Buddha], as well as the Buddha's teeth and bones, and buried them in the Mañjuśrī Hall of this temple," on June 22, 1013. At the site where the statues and Buddha remains were buried, archaeologists also found the remains of a structure that could be from the Mañjuśrī Hall. [See Photos of the Buddhist Statues and Cremated Remains of Buddha] Yunjiang and Zhiming spent more than 20 years gathering the remains of the Buddha, who is also sometimes referred to as Gautama Buddha, the inscription notes. "In order to promote Buddhism, they wanted to collect śarīra [Buddhist relics]. To reach this goal, both of them practiced the instruction of Buddhism during every moment of their lives for more than 20 years," the inscription says. "Sometimes they received the śarīra from others' donations; sometimes they found them by chance; sometimes they bought them from other places; and sometimes others gave them the śarīra to demonstrate their wholeheartedness." The inscription does not mention the 260 Buddhist statues that were found buried near the remains of the Buddha. The archaeologists aren't sure whether or not the statues were buried at the same time as the cremated remains, wrote the team of archaeologists, who were led by Hong Wu, a research fellow at the Gansu Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, in two articles published recently in the journal Chinese Cultural Relics. The archaeologists did not speculate on whether any of the remains are actually from the Buddha who died around 2,500 years ago. Previous archaeological discoveries in China have also revealed human remains with inscriptions that claim that they belong to the Buddha the archaeologists noted. These include a skull bone, supposedly from the Buddha, found inside a gold chest in Nanjing.
A bizarre 'Martian' lake - that is said to have healing properties - could contain the same tiny life forms that exist on the Red Planet. The Spotted Lake in British Columbia, Canada, features hundreds of different coloured pools, each said to have different medical benefits, according to legend. For example, one pool might help with someone suffering with warts, while another pool would be more helpful for body aches and joint pain. But perhaps more impressively, the lake contains the highest concentration of sulphates seen anywhere on the planet. In fact, experts over at The Science Channel, who have studied the lake say that it's like a huge "chunk of Mars has somehow broken off and traveled 33 million miles." It means that the 'Martian-type lake' could contain 'Martian-type life' Experts said: "Analysis of water from Spotted Lake reveals that organisms are indeed living in the pools. "It's like Mars has come to Earth, and in these weird holes are clues to life on the Red Planet." Biochemist Rollie Williams added: "It's possible that some kind of life like that might be existing on Mars, which would be an insane discovery." The lake is unique in that it has no outflow. There are no streams running in or out of the water. Collections of saline and brine have pooled together in different quantities throughout the lake, leaving the phenomenon of the strange circles that can be clearly seen from an aerial view. Some believe Ouija boards are fabricated nonsense, but others think they are possessed by demonic spirits. The board game has a dark history, but not everyone believes in its supernatural powers. Some have warned against the use of ouija words, claiming they can lead to "demonic possession". Ouija boards have their roots in 19th century America and the spiritualist movement. The movement was led by mediums, who claimed to be intermediaries between the living and the dead. Astronomers have found an enormous new planet with 13.4 times the mass of Jupiter, circling a star in the "bulge" of the Milky Way, a tightly packed group of stars within the galaxy. Planet X is the name given to any new planet that has yet to be officially named. But it is also one of the names given to the mythical Nibiru system, which some conspiracy theorists believe will soon pass the Earth, causing a global apocalypse. News of the discovery of the new planet, currently called OGLE-2016-BLG-1190Lb, has fired up believers of the Nibiru theory, that it could be proof of the fabled system. The Nibiru or Planet X theory claims a mini solar system consisting of a sun, planets and moons is lurking on the edge of our solar system with a huge 3,600 miles orbit of the sun. Nibiru believers are convinced the "rogue system" is making its way from the outer solar system inwards, where it will wreak havoc on Earth as it passes at about four million miles away. They say the planet will cause the poles to switch, sparking great earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Believers now claim it will be on an approach path with the Earth between November 20 and December 20. One user of conspiracy theory website Godlikeproductions.com, based in Australia, believes OGLE-2016-BLG-1190Lb could be proof of Nibiru. The user with the handle Daniel (D Alien) started a forum on the site entitled "Has Nibiru Been Hiding in the Heart of Our Galaxy All Along?," after learning of the news. One person with the user name Anonymous replied: "Looks like no one really knows what is out there." However, others rounded on the forum creator for starting it. A third with the user name Anonymous Coward posted: "Please apply your mind. "Nibiru is an ordinary planet that will never orbit near here again and it hasn't been hiding anywhere."
Details of the new planet were published in a paper published on arXiv.org. It was found via microlensing, a technique for detecting alien worlds which does not require the light from its host star. And the technique is used to find planets in the inner galactic disk and bulge, where it can be hard to look for planets using other methods. Planet OGLE-2016-BLG-1190Lb was found by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) collaboration, a Polish astronomical project based at the University of Warsaw, using the 1.3 metre Warsaw telescope mounted at the Las Campanas observatory in Chile. An international team of researchers led by Yoon-Hyun Ryu of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute in Daejon, South Korea, also looked at the findings. The team said in the paper: "We report the discovery of OGLE-2016-BLG-1190Lb, which is likely to be the first Spitzer microlensing planet in the galactic bulge/bar, an assignation that can be confirmed by two epochs of high-resolution imaging of the combined source-lens baseline object." It is so big the team is not sure if it is actually a failed brown dwarf star instead of a giant planet. However, it orbits its parent star approximately every three years, 22,000 light years from Earth. It is not the first new planet Nibiru believers have pounced upon. Earlier this year US space agency Nasa announced the discovery of a hypothetical Planet 9 at the edge of our solar system. The planet is believed to be 10 times bigger than Earth and 20 times farther out from the sun than Neptune – the outermost planet in the solar system. However, Nasa said it was not Nibiru, which "does not exist." In a statement, Nasa said: "If a planet is there, it's extremely distant and will stay that way, with no chance – in case you're wondering – of ever colliding with Earth, or bringing ‘days of darkness’.” The Nibiru myth emerged in 1976, when writer Zecharia Sitchin claimed two ancient Middle Eastern cultures, the Babylonians and Sumerians, told of a giant planet dubbed Nibiru which orbited the Sun. Donald Trump may be related to a 16th-century cannibal serial killer, according to new research. Academics investigating the infamous tale of Peter Stubbe, known as the Werewolf of Bedburg, turned up shock evidence that could point towards the US President's known German ancestry. A British newspaper received a mystery call minutes before the assassination of John F Kennedy. This is one of the most astonishing revelations from the JFK files, released on Thursday. The revelation was made in papers relating to the killing, which happened on November 22 1963. A memo to the director of FBI revealed that a call was made to the senior reporter at the Cambridge News at 6.05pm on the day Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas. Robert was donated to the East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida in 1994. He has been dubbed the most haunted doll in the world - and is believed to be the inspiration for Chucky. Robert the Doll was gifted to Robert Eugene Otto in 1904 by his family’s Bahamian maid, who is believed to have practiced black magic and voodoo. The sailor-suited bear stands at 40-inches tall, is stuffed with wood chippings and once bore painted features, not unlike those of a jester. He is a one-of-a-kind, handmade by the Steiff Company of Germany around the turn of the century. It is believed Robert was part of a set fabricated for a window display and was never supposed to be sold as a toy.
Legend has it that Robert – who went by the name ‘Gene’ – told his parents the doll destroyed his other toys and would knock furniture over during the night. Gene’s parents often heard him talking to the bear. At first, they assumed their son was simply answering himself in a changed voice but later claimed to believe the doll was actually speaking. Neighbours claimed to have seen Robert moving from window to window when the family was out. Others reported seeing the bear’s facial expressions change. Robert was the inspiration for Chucky, the two-foot high murderer made famous in horror film, Child’s Play. In the movie, the notorious serial killer's spirit inhabits a 'good guy' doll. He continuously tries to transfer his soul from the doll to a human body. When Gene grew up and left the family home, he left Robert behind in the attic. The new owners converted the building into a bed and breakfast and claimed to have heard Robert moving around at night. Some even reported hearing him laughing. Robert was donated to the East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida in 1994 – and the controversy around him has not ended. Cameras and electronic devices are said to malfunction in his presence. Many have also blamed their post-visit misfortune – everything from car accidents to job losses and divorce – on failing to respect the bear. Staff say Robert gets one to three letters a day from visitors apologising for acting rudely around him and asking to lift evil voodoo curses. Discussing Gene’s close relationship with Robert, museum curator Cori Convertito told Atlas Obscura: “What people really remember is what they would probably term as an unhealthy relationship with the doll. “He brought it everywhere, he talked about it in the first person as if he weren’t a doll, he was Robert. Halloween is regarded as the Witches' Sabbat, the equivalent of their New Year's Eve. Its roots lie firmly in the old pagan holiday of Samhain, which - along with May 1, Beltane - was regarded as one of the most important days of the year. People claimed the ancient Druids ate their firstborn children on Samhain, or collected the blood of their sacrificial humans in cauldrons and drank it. The stories get gorier, claiming that hollowed out pumpkins and turnips would be filled with fat from previous sacrifices and lit. It was the arrival of the Romans in 55 BC that signaled the start the end of Druid culture in the UK. Julius Caesar even commented about the ancient Brits that in times of danger, "unless the life of a man be offered, the mind of immortal gods will not favour them." It was traditional to light a candle and place it in the window to guide the spirits of ancestors and loved ones home, and apples were buried alongside roadsides for spirits who were lost or who had no descendants to provide for them. However, present-day Pagans' Samhain celebration is a much safer affair, and focus on the night's origins as 'Feast of the Dead'. Focusing on the belief that it is easier to communicate with dead relatives and loved ones, ghosts are firmly at the centre of proceedings. It's not uncommon for Pagans to hold a Dumb Supper, where a feast is prepared with an empty place at the table for the spirits of dead ancestors. A portion of each food and drink served must be placed onto their plate or in their cup throughout the meal, which must be eaten in total silence. It's also crucial that no one looks at the empty chair for the spiritual diner - looking at the ghost over the dinner table brings bad luck on the household.
