Mysterious Cliff 'Lays Egg-Shaped' Stones!

A bizarre small cliff that lays egg-shaped stones every 30 years has left scientists scratching their heads. Locals have watched these perfectly smooth eggs incubate into hollow overhangs on the cliff and have eventually fallen to the ground. And now Chinese geologists may have solved the mystery at Chan D Ya – which translates as the “egg-producing chill” in Mandarin.

They found that while tests showed the rock formed 500 million years ago during the Cambrian period the specific section of cliff – part of Mount Gandeng – is made of calcareous rock which is common in many regions on earth. Experts say the difference in time it takes for each type of rock to erode has led to the mysterious appearance of the eggs. But this still doesn’t explain how the rocks have miraculously appeared in smooth round shapes, or how a half-a-billion-year-old geological region managed to contain the calcareous rock formation...CONTINUE READING
